The death of an author

The year has almost ended, but this year has been a year of great losses for all of us. This year we lost Dara singh, Jagjeet singh, Bhupen hazarika and Rajesh Khanna. All of them luminarie in the world of entertainemnt. But the biggest loss has been the death of Sunil Ganguly. I started reading sunil ganguly in school time, with Bhoyankor Sundor being the first. Very soon Dugna followed, with Nil manusher dukkho soon afterwards. After that in college time and after that I dont remember how many novels and short stories of his, I head read. He was the mainstay of contemporary Bengali literature. His novels were in my mind and of entire generation of bengali reading public. Jola Jangaler Kabbo, Kalo Rasta Sada bari, Kaka Babu Here Gelen, Sajub Dwiper Raja, I can keep counting the names for ever. After becoming adult, I read his books even more. Rokto, Tin Samudra Satash Nodi, Ekush Bochhor boyeshe, Ekti nodir naam, and so many many more. Even prominent film makers like Satyajit Ray and Gautam Ghosh made two of his novels into movie (Aranyer din ratri, and Pratidwandi, Dekha, Lalon Fakir). Even in college days, and after passing college, we used to wait anxiously for his weekly edition of Sei Somoy, that spans the period of Bengal Renaissance. After that, long time later I read his two part novel Prothom Alo, and it left an undelible impression on my mind. He has written most prolificly among contemporary Bengali writers, and also among all bengali writers. He will have his place in bengali literature. His loss I will have to bear in my heart, because this loss will never be made up.
