Victory for Mamata Banerjee

At last the election results of West Bengal are out. After a long 6 phase long elections, and after cunting are over, Mamata Banerjee's TMC with allies congress are in power.

In the first look of course, it is the hard work of Mamata and her party workers and the people of West Bengal giving vent to their anger. But as each one of the TMC candidates spelled out, without the kind of steps taken by the election commission, along with central forces, who ensured that the elections are free and fare in all the senses, the victory may not have been possible.

What all the stalwarts of congress could not achieve, has been done by one Women, who took CPM face-to-face and challenged the party for all the misgovernance it has done in last 34 years.

The decline of Bengal has also seen rise of other states, like Gujarat and Maharashtra and Karnataka. IT industry and BPO has transformed India's urban scene. But West Bengal has remained untouched. The only thing CPM claim to have done is that they have done land reforms.

But the general condition in Bengal is very bad. In primary education it is in 18th out of 20 states of the country. The total percentage of poor people (below proverty line) is about 40%. The state's compliance with central schemes like NREGA is very poor. As compared to Andhra Pradesh which could provide 87 days of employement to rural poor, WB could only provide 14 days employment to the rural unemployed.
Primary school female child dropout ratio is second highest after Bihar. The state is in debt of Rs 200,000 Crores.

In 1983, the CPM lead Govt removed English from Primary education. That lead to massive degradation of quality of education. In all-India competitive examinations, candidates from WB lagged behind. The number of unemployed in WB was above 1 crore by the last count. That is educated unemployed.

Although English was re-introduced to class 1 from 2001, by that time a massive section of unemployed has been generated. They could not speak English. And yet they were educated. They could only be used as vote bank by CPM.

But the people of WB were blissfully unaware of all these. They continues to vote for CPM lead Left front again and again. That lead to sense of immunity among CPM lead Left front parties.

The credit of Mamata Banerjee is that, she made people aware of Left front's failures.

The Govt of WB was the least performing Govt in the country. For every peroformance question, they had an excuse. The city of Kolkata has become a virtual slum. Mostly manial jobs are available in Kolkata. And hardly any industry exista in WB. As compared to Bangalore,Pune, Hyderabad, Delhi or Chennai, IT jobs and modern sector jobs are few and far between. And yet people of WB were sleeping and praising their leftist slogans. Some people started giving excuses for Left front as if they were proxies of Left front.

Just by parameters of electoral performance, for example, Assam's Congrees Govt did far better. In rural areas there has been considerable peogress. Quite some work has been done in the cities and towns. The steps taken in terms of poverty alleviation also, Assam made the maxmimum progress in the entire country (vide India Today State of the States).

So obviously even by comarison with other states also there was need of change in Governance in WB.

And that came on 13th of May 2011.

I personally hail Mamata Banejeee for dethroning the CPM. It had become an evil monster. The people of West Bengal deserves better. They need conventional industry, IT industry, and more employement for educated people.
